Breast Care

At BlueStone Advanced Surgical Care we provide comprehensive care for your breast concerns — including treatment for breast infections, breast lumps, breast pain and breast cancers.

In addition to office consultations, we offer in-office, minimally invasive, ultrasound-guided breast biopsies. Many breast lumps, including those that cannot be felt and can only been seen by ultrasound, can be diagnosed in this manner. This allows for a rapid, minimally invasive, relatively non-painful procedure to be performed, providing you a diagnosis as quickly and accurately as possible.

After your biopsy we will counsel you about the meaning of the results and what, if anything, needs to be done next.  For many patients with benign breast problems, a few rechecks are all that are necessary. For breast cancer patients, we offer a strong referral network of local oncologists, radiation oncologists and plastic surgeons for your comprehensive care.

Some breast lumps cannot be biopsied by ultrasound guided breast biopsy and may require open surgical biopsy. The surgeons at BlueStone can provide rapid access to the operating room for such biopsies and, in some instances, referral to a radiologist for stereotactic (mammogram-guided) biopsy.

Not all breast lumps are cancer.

Whenever a woman or her doctor finds a lump or change in the breast, the first concern is cancer.  While not all lumps are cancer (in fact, many aren’t) the surgeons at BlueStone will counsel you on your personal risk of cancer and, when necessary, perform or arrange for a biopsy to determine if a lump is benign (not cancer) or malignant (cancer or sometimes pre-cancer).

Breast cancer is a

treatable disease.

In treating breast cancer, early diagnosis and management lead to improved outcomes.

It is our goal to provide you with a diagnosis and treatment as quickly as possible so that you can expect the best possible survival for your staged breast cancer.

We will work with you to obtain a diagnosis, then, recommend the best type of surgical removal.  Not all breast cancers require a mastectomy (removal of the whole breast).  Many women are able to undergo a lumpectomy or breast conservation surgery to remove small or early cancers.  If a mastectomy is necessary we can recommend a plastic surgeon to provide breast reconstruction after your surgery.

After you have recovered from surgery we then provide referral to both oncologists and radiation specialists who will recommend appropriate hormonal or chemotherapy and radiation treatment if it is necessary for your tumor.

Women of all ages and walks of life develop breast cancer.  It is more common in older women but can affect young women, and can occur during pregnancy.  Early diagnosis and treatment gives patients the best chance at long term survival.

For the earliest detected cancers over 90% of women survive.  Most of these cancers are removed as outpatient procedures and can be safely performed in women of all ages.
